As a kid, when we got our first family computer, we didn't have any games, but I loved to play in Microsoft paint. In high school I took my first graphic design class and I was hooked. I started working for parks and recreation and saved my first paychecks until I could buy my own laptop with a bootleg version of Photoshop. (sorry adobe)
It was all fun and games until my second year of college. My typography professor told us that once we took her class we would see type everywhere. I was skeptical, but I could not help it, everywhere I looked I saw type. It was like Neo leaving the matrix.
I realized that everything is designed. Everything I saw, every sign, package, coffee cup, article of clothing, everything was made on purpose, and with a purpose. And as a designer I have the POWER to solve problems and make the world a more beautiful place.
When I wasn't working or in school, I was volunteering at church. I started doing children's ministry and then youth group. Once they found out about my design skills, I began doing all their graphic design and running all their media. This gave me an opportunity to serve God with my talents and get some real world experience. I designed their logo, designed the website, did flyers, handouts, t-shirts and more.
I loved working with kids at my recreation job, but I needed to expand my design career. I was blessed to find a non-profit that worked with at-risk teens in need of graphic design. It was a perfect combination of my experience with youth and my passion for design.
This place had a startup atmosphere where everyone worked long hours and did many different jobs. I learned a lot about design, but also the hard work and determination it takes to get a small organization started.
As the organization grew, my design skills were being relied on more and more. The founder started having me work on design projects for other organizations and companies he was a part of. He gave me an opportunity to continue working on design projects as an independent contractor.
And that's when I started DRENOS.
